Self-adhesive labels have been widely adopted in all walks of life in society due to their convenience of use. Judging from the market of self-adhesive labels in China in recent years, the consumption of self-adhesive labels has been growing rapidly and has great market potential. With the continuous expansion of application fields, the requirements for the performance of self-adhesive labels are also developing towards complexity, diversity and high precision.
The structure of self-adhesive label materials
Self-adhesive label materials are composed of three elements: surface base material, adhesive, and non-stick paper or non-stick film. According to the purpose and application, label materials that meet various performance requirements can be produced through different combinations.
1. Adhesive. Adhesives can be classified into three types based on whether the label is permanently attached to the product, must be peeled off after being attached, or peeled off and then re-attached: permanent adhesion (strong adhesion) type, re-peeling (weak adhesion) type, and heavy adhesion type.
2. Anti-sticking paper, anti-mucous membrane. The non-stick properties, surface smoothness, warpage resistance, dimensional stability and die-cutting processing adaptability of non-stick paper and non-stick film are of vital importance. For instance, the Japanese company Lintec can also produce self-adhesive non-stick paper that is convenient for the recycling of waste paper without polyethylene lamination.
3. Surface substrate. To increase the added value of goods, when choosing label materials, the most important thing is to correctly select the surface base material of the label. Not only should the color, texture and pattern requirements be met, but also conditions such as heat resistance and water resistance. In addition, it is necessary to adapt to the requirements of diverse printing and printing methods.
The characteristics of surface substrate and anti-sticking film
1. The types and characteristics of paper substrates
Offset paper: A non-coated paper with good printing and processing adaptability, mainly 64g/m2, and there are also color offset papers of 81.4g/m2 and 104.7g/m2.
Coated paper and coated paper: Coated with paint on the surface of coated paper, suitable for high-end printing.
Glass-faced cardstock: Compared with coated paper and coated paper, it further enhances the smoothness and gloss of the paper, making it appear more upscale.
Aluminum foil paper: A very thin aluminum foil sheet is laminated on paper with high smoothness, and it comes in various colors such as gold, silver (glossy, matte), etc.
Recycled paper: The raw materials are mixed with waste paper, but it does not affect the printability and is an environmentally friendly product. Some enterprises (such as Japan's Lintec Company) use 100% recycled paper as the base material for the surface of self-adhesive labels, and the products have obtained the ECO-MARK(green mark) certification.
Impregnated paper: Resin is impregnated into paper to enhance its strength and water resistance.
Specialty paper: such as water-resistant paper, fluorescent paper and colored paper, etc., with different colors, textures and properties, suitable for various uses.
Variable message printing paper: Different types of paper suitable for various printing methods such as inkjet, electronic photography, thermal, and melt thermal transfer.
2. Types and characteristics of substrate materials on the film surface
Polyester film: including transparent, white, matte, foamed, aluminum-coated and brushed processed films with high heat resistance and transparency. Film manufacturers have different names for films. PET stands for polyester film. The thickness of the film is 12-250μm. The surface of the film coated with aluminum on PET is represented by FN. If it is silver, it is indicated as FNS light. Matte gold is represented as FNG matte. In addition, those that undergo wire drawing processing before aluminum plating are denoted as HL.
Polypropylene film: Generally represented by PP, it comes in several types such as white, transparent, semi-transparent, and aluminum-coated. It has excellent transparency and water resistance, and outstanding adaptability to curved surfaces.
Polystyrene film: Generally denoted by PS, it comes in white and transparent types, with a film thickness ranging from 25 to 120μm. It is mostly used for labels made of the same material as the substrate (recyclable type).
Synthetic molding: It mainly uses plastic as the raw material and possesses the whiteness, opacity and printability of paper as well as the characteristics of plastic.
Polyvinyl chloride film: Generally, it is mostly represented as PVC. This material is soft and has good water resistance, making it most suitable for signs, etc.
Polyimide film: It has stable oil resistance and low and high temperature resistance, and is mainly used for heat-resistant barcode labels.
Variable message printing film: Suitable for various printing methods such as inkjet, electronic photography, and thermal transfer.
In addition to paper and film substrates, there are also surface substrates such as satin, non-woven fabric and aluminum monomers.
