Coated paper is a premium-grade printing substrate manufactured by applying a uniform layer of mineral-based coating-comprising high-purity pigments (e.g., kaolin and precipitated barium sulfate), synthetic or natural binders (e.g., polyvinyl alcohol or casein), and functional additives-to a high-quality base paper. Its surface exhibits exceptional smoothness, brightness, and gloss, enabling superior ink receptivity, sharp dot reproduction, and vibrant color fidelity. As one of the most widely utilized papers in commercial and publishing printing, coated paper serves critical roles in high-end applications-including book covers, periodical interiors, fine-art reproductions, marketing collateral (e.g., posters, brochures, and calendars), and photographic prints.
Coated papers are classified according to both structure and performance: single-sided (SC), double-sided (DC), matte-finish, and textured variants (e.g., linen- or canvas-effect grades). Quality grading (Class A, B, or C) reflects consistency in optical properties, dimensional stability, and printability. Basis weights commonly range from 105 g/m² to 350 g/m², with standard sheet sizes including medium format (787 mm × 1092 mm) and large format (889 mm × 1194 mm); historical specifications such as 880 mm × 1230 mm remain relevant for certain legacy production lines.
The base paper must meet stringent criteria: uniform caliper, low compressibility, high tensile strength, and controlled moisture resistance. Surface defects-including mottling, wrinkles, pinholes, or dust spots-are strictly minimized to ensure coating integrity. The coating suspension-characterized by high solids content and optimized rheology-is applied via precision blade or roll coaters, followed by controlled drying, reel winding, supercalendering for surface refinement, and final slitting, inspection, and packaging.
Notably, textured offset papers-produced by embossing the dried coated sheet with patterned rollers (historically using reclaimed wool blankets)-confer tactile depth and visual dimensionality to printed imagery. These grades are especially suited for illustrated books, premium advertising, landscape and portrait photography, and luxury calendars, where aesthetic differentiation and haptic engagement enhance perceived value.
