Amid escalating environmental challenges and the progressive tightening of global environmental regulations, sustainability and ecological responsibility have become critical priorities for the printing and packaging industry, attracting significant attention from manufacturers, retailers, and raw material suppliers alike.

Effective green packaging must satisfy three essential criteria. First, while fulfilling its core functions-product protection, storage and transportation facilitation, and sales promotion-it should utilize the minimum necessary amount of packaging material. Second, packaging materials and containers must exhibit high chemical stability, ensuring no interaction with the contents (e.g., food products) that could result in contamination or the release of harmful substances during storage. In other words, green packaging must guarantee the safety and integrity of the packaged goods. Third, packaging waste should either decompose naturally within a reasonable timeframe-through the use of biodegradable materials such as compostable plastics-or be designed for reuse, recycling, or even edibility, thereby minimizing environmental impact.

Green packaging represents an evolution beyond traditional packaging paradigms. It refers to packaging that is environmentally benign, safe for human health, reusable, recyclable, and fully aligned with the principles of sustainable development. As such, it constitutes an indispensable solution to the growing problem of environmental degradation caused by conventional packaging practices.

Currently, China's regulatory framework regarding packaging remains relatively permissive. Consumer preferences often lean toward premium and elaborately packaged products, incentivizing companies to invest heavily in ornate packaging designs-a practice that fosters excessive packaging. Additionally, some enterprises perceive high-end packaging as a means to enhance brand image and increase profit margins. However, such approaches not only undermine consumer interests but also contribute significantly to environmental harm.

Globally, there is a growing consensus on the urgent need for green packaging and the preservation of planetary resources. Paper-based technologies are poised to play a pivotal role in transforming the packaging sector. The shift from conventional materials such as wood, plastic, glass, and metal to paper-based alternatives has gained widespread recognition as a cornerstone of sustainable development. Green packaging is thus set to define the future trajectory of the global packaging industry.
