food grade paper

Many friends engaged in the food business are interested in how the food-grade packaging paper we use daily is produced. In fact, the biggest difference between it and ordinary paper lies in that it is designed throughout in accordance with food safety and hygiene standards. Every step has strict requirements to ensure that the final product can be safely in contact with food.

The first step in production is the strict selection of raw materials. Food-grade packaging paper cannot use inferior recycled materials, nor are harmful substances such as fluorescent agents and heavy metals allowed to be added. Most of the pulp is made from certified virgin wood pulp, and some eco-friendly models will use recycled pulp that meets food contact standards. All the adhesives, waterproof and oil-resistant agents added must also be of food-grade formula, ensuring safety from the very beginning.

Next comes the pulp processing stage. The raw pulp sheets are subjected to crushing and pulping to make the fiber structure more uniform and the paper more resilient. This process only uses clean production water, without any impurities mixed in, and the pulp concentration is strictly controlled to ensure that the subsequently formed paper has consistent thickness and a smooth surface.

Then the paper-making and shaping stage begins. The pulp is evenly spread on the mesh surface by the equipment, followed by pressing, dehydration, and high-temperature drying, resulting in the formation of the base paper. Throughout the process, precise control is maintained over temperature and humidity to ensure that the paper strength meets the standards, while also maintaining cleanliness and hygiene to prevent contamination during production.

Many food packaging papers need to have the functions of oil-proofing, water-proofing and heat resistance, so surface treatment is also carried out. The common methods include coating with food-grade coatings or laminating treatment, which enables the paper to both preserve the freshness of the food and prevent leakage and damage. The coating materials used in this step also need to comply with food contact standards and must not release any odors or harmful substances.

Finally, there is the post-processing and inspection stage. The paper is cut and rewound in a clean workshop. Products that require printing will only use eco-friendly ink without benzene or ketone. Before leaving the factory, it undergoes multiple tests, including sensory tests, physical and chemical indicators, and migration quantity tests. Only when all the tests are passed can it be officially stored and supplied to food enterprises for use.

It is precisely this rigorous and standardized production process that makes food-grade packaging paper both safe and reliable, and capable of meeting practical requirements such as packaging, transportation, and preservation. As a result, it has become an indispensable packaging choice in the food industry.
