How Thickness Affects Paper Quality

When we talk about paper thickness, we focus on two complementary measurements:

Grammage (gsm) – grams per square meter.
This is the basis weight. It tells you how much a sheet weighs per square meter. Higher gsm generally means a heavier, often thicker sheet, but density varies by pulp type.

Caliper (thickness) – measured in mm or points (1 point = 0.001 inch; often in Europe we use microns or mm).
This is the actual physical thickness under a specified pressure. Two papers with the same gsm can have different calipers-one can be "bulky" (high caliper) and the other "dense" (low caliper).

How Thickness Affects Paper Quality?

Thickness influences several critical quality aspects:

Stiffness & Feel – Thicker paper feels more substantial and premium. It resists bending, which is essential for covers, business cards, and packaging.

Show-through – In double-sided printing, thicker paper (with proper opacity) prevents ink from showing on the opposite side.

Opacity – Thicker sheets block light better, making them ideal for envelopes, books, and packaging where privacy or high-end appearance matters.

Convertibility – Thicker stocks are better for embossing, foil stamping, and die-cutting, while thinner papers excel at folding and high-speed digital printing.

Recommended Thickness by Application

Here's a practical guide based on grammage and typical caliper:

Lightweight (60–120 gsm) – Flexible & economical

Caliper range: approx. 0.06–0.12 mm

Uses:

60–80 gsm: Office copy paper, internal documents, forms, book interiors (text weight). Ideal for high-volume text printing.

100–120 gsm: Magazines, premium letterheads, lightweight brochures. Better opacity for double-sided printing.

Mid-weight (120–200 gsm) – The workhorse for interiors

Caliper range: approx. 0.12–0.20 mm

Uses:

Company brochures, catalog pages, report covers, and high-end magazine inserts.

Offers good stiffness while still being easy to fold.

Heavyweight (200–300 gsm) – Covers & single-sheet items

Caliper range: approx. 0.20–0.35 mm

Uses:

200–250 gsm: Brochure covers, flyers, posters, postcards, greeting cards. Sturdy enough for mailing.

250–300 gsm: Premium business cards, invitations, hang tags, hardcover book covers. Excellent for embossing and foil stamping.

Cardboard & Board (300+ gsm) – Structural & packaging

Caliper range: 0.35 mm and above

Uses:

Shopping bags, rigid boxes, presentation folders, archival mounting boards, and luxury packaging.

Usually scored or creased for folding; provides structural strength.
