Paper is broadly categorized into three primary types: uncoated paper, coated paper, and specialty paper.
Uncoated paper refers to paper that has not undergone surface coating treatment. Based on brightness (whiteness) and optical properties, it is commonly classified into three grades: premium-grade (exceeding Grade A specifications), standard-grade (Grade B), and economy-grade (Grade C). Owing to its matte finish and absence of reflective surface characteristics, uncoated paper is particularly suited for flat-printed media where high gloss or image fidelity is not required. Typical applications include photocopy paper, notebooks, general-purpose books, and comic book interiors.

Coated paper features a surface layer-typically composed of clay, calcium carbonate, or other pigments-applied in one or more layers to enhance smoothness, opacity, and printability. High-quality coated papers, such as art paper (commonly referred to as "copperplate paper"), undergo rigorous calendering and surface finishing, enabling exceptional reproduction of photographic detail and fine halftones. However, this processing reduces tactile distinction and imparts a uniform, sometimes impersonal appearance. Moreover, repeated calendering results in reduced bulk relative to uncoated papers of comparable basis weight and price point. Coated paper is therefore widely employed in high-fidelity printed materials-including product catalogs, promotional posters, technical manuals, and calendars-where visual clarity and color accuracy are paramount.

Specialty papers encompass a diverse range of substrates engineered for distinctive aesthetic, functional, or tactile properties-including chromatic papers, textured papers, metallized papers, and papers with enhanced durability or optical effects. Generally, these materials command a premium over standard printing papers due to specialized raw materials, complex manufacturing processes, and lower production volumes. Nevertheless, they enable unique visual and haptic outcomes unattainable with conventional stocks. Below are several representative examples:
• Pearl Paper: A tri-layer composite comprising a fibrous base, mineral fillers, and a proprietary pearlescent surface coating. It exhibits high smoothness, substantial caliper (thickness), and pronounced light reflectivity, yielding an iridescent, pearl-like sheen. Ideal for luxury applications-such as high-end photo books, premium greeting cards, jewelry packaging, and fashion lookbooks-where elegance and visual impact are critical.
• Super Sensory Paper: An artistic paper featuring a micro-thin, precisely controlled surface coating. With opacity exceeding 90% and an exceptionally refined surface finish, it delivers outstanding tactile smoothness and a luxurious hand feel-making it well-suited for premium brochures, limited-edition publications, and brand-sensitive collateral.
• Cellophane (Regenerated Cellulose Film): A transparent, dimensionally stable, and moisture-resistant film derived from wood pulp. Its natural warm-toned translucency-reminiscent of aged parchment-lends itself to heritage-inspired or retro design aesthetics. Due to its low color saturation capacity and limited ink adhesion, it is best utilized for single-color or line-art printing, especially in packaging overlays and decorative wrappers.
• Sulphite Transfer Paper (commonly misnamed "sulfuric acid paper"): A highly translucent, tear-resistant, and chemically stable paper traditionally used in tracing, drafting, and carbonless duplication. Its archival stability and excellent dimensional integrity make it suitable for technical drawing overlays, book endpapers, title pages, and protective inner packaging-particularly within fine art and publishing sectors.
