1. Overview
Paper is one of the most essential mediums for recording and disseminating cultural knowledge, playing a vital role in human intellectual and social development. Beyond its traditional function in cultural and educational contexts, paper has become an indispensable material across various sectors, including industry, agriculture, construction, and packaging. With rapid advancements in production technology, thousands of paper varieties now exist globally. In everyday applications alone, hundreds of distinct types of paper and paperboard are in widespread use.
2. Manufacturing Process
The production of paper and paperboard from pulp involves a series of well-defined processing stages, including pulping, filling, sizing, bleaching, purification, and screening. Subsequently, on a paper machine, the pulp undergoes forming, dewatering, pressing, drying, calendering, and winding to produce parent rolls. Some grades may require additional treatments such as coating or supercalendering. The final products are either slit and cut into sheets of specified dimensions or rewound into rolls of designated sizes, followed by packaging and storage in warehouses.
3. Classification and Applications
Based on their end uses, paper products can be broadly categorized into four main groups: cultural paper, industrial and technical paper, packaging paper, and household paper.
(1) Newsprint
(STANDARD NEWSPRINT PAPER)
Commonly referred to as newsprint, this uncoated groundwood paper is primarily used for printing newspapers. It is also suitable for illustrated books, children's coloring books, school exercise books, and business forms. Newsprint accounts for approximately 15% of global paper and paperboard consumption, reflecting its significant market presence.
(2) Coated Paper
(REAL ART PRINTING PAPER)
Coated paper is a high-quality printing paper produced by applying a pigment coating-typically white paint-onto base paper. Depending on surface finish, it is classified as either glossy or matte. This paper is particularly suited for offset and screen printing, offering excellent print clarity and color reproduction. It is widely used for illustrations, book covers, picture magazines, portraits, premium catalogs, and trademarks in high-end art publications and periodicals. In domestic practice, it is commonly employed in both letterpress and offset printing processes.
(3) White Board Paper
(WHITE WOODFREE COVERED DUPLEX BOARD)
White board paper is a premium-grade packaging paper primarily used for manufacturing folding cartons for cigarettes, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, food, and stationery. It must exhibit superior printability and fold resistance. Two variants are available: coated and uncoated. Imported white board paper typically features a coated surface, enhancing its visual and functional qualities.
(4) Kraft Linerboard
(KRAFT LINERBOARD)
Kraft linerboard, commonly known as boxboard in China, is a strong corrugated medium used in the production of durable shipping containers. It serves as a lightweight and cost-effective alternative to wooden crates, offering advantages in volume and weight efficiency. Kraft linerboard constitutes one of the principal packaging paper types in China, with imports accounting for approximately 10% of total packaging paper supply. Domestically, it is classified into four grades: U, A, B, and C.
- Grade U corresponds to international advanced standards.
- Grade A meets general international quality levels.
- Grade B represents the average domestic standard.
This paper is extensively used for packaging textiles, daily consumer goods, hardware, electrical products, and export commodities.
(5) Offset Printing Paper
(WOODFREE OFFSET PRINTING PAPER)
Offset printing paper is a high-quality, wood-free paper designed for printing art periodicals, photographs, illustrations, and similar materials. It is available in single-sided and double-sided finishes and classified into special, first, and second grades. While domestic production dominates the Chinese market, a substantial quantity is exported annually to meet international demand.
(6) Specialty Paper (Art Paper)
Also known as art or specialty paper, this category requires specialized equipment and techniques for production. The resulting papers feature diverse colors, textures, and patterns. Due to the wide variety of available types, only representative applications are listed here. Specialty papers are commonly used in premium book covers, photo albums, brochures, invitations, greeting cards, luxury business cards, high-end office stationery, and exclusive packaging solutions.
