Introduction: Flattening of corrugated cardboard can significantly reduce its compressive strength, which in turn affects the structural integrity and load-bearing capacity of empty cartons. Several factors contribute to this issue, and each will be analyzed and addressed below.
1. Causes
1. The corrugating rolls are misaligned or not parallel, resulting in tilted corrugation formation.
2. Low flute height or wear on the corrugating roller.
3. Secondary flattening occurs after the corrugation is formed.
4. Excessive tension applied to the core paper roll.
5. Over-saturation of the core paper due to excessive steam application from the spray device.
6. Flattened flutes at glue application points caused by the gluing mechanism.
7. Uneven tension between the upper and lower conveyor belts of the double-sided machine, leading to inclined corrugation.
8. Premature flattening of the corrugations.
9. Insufficient compressive strength of the core paper material.
2. Corrective Measures
1. Adjust the alignment of the corrugating rolls to ensure they are parallel.
2. Replace worn corrugating rollers to restore proper flute formation.
3. Inspect and adjust all potential pinch points that may flatten the corrugation, including misaligned paper guide rollers, pressure rollers, or hot plate systems; also check for uneven pressure or tension across the sheet.
4. Reduce the braking force on the base paper frame and verify the positioning of the preprocessor.
5. Decrease the amount of steam applied to the core paper to prevent over-saturation.
6. Minimize the gap during glue application between the single-faced board and the linerboard.
7. Ensure consistent speed and tension across both conveyor belts.
8. Investigate and resolve any post-formation flattening or tilting issues.
9. Replace low-quality core paper rolls and consult with the supplier regarding material specifications.
