PART.01
Introduction to Coated Paper
In 2023, domestic inkjet rotary printing equipment achieved innovative applications on coated paper, exerting a significant impact on the digital printing industry. What are the characteristics of coated paper and in which fields is it mainly used? What are the precautions during binding? Let's take a look!
Coated paper is made by coating and decorating the coated base paper. The surface is smooth and fine. There are double-sided and single-sided coatings. The paper comes in glossy and matte (sub-glossy) coated types. Coated paper is mainly used for printing the covers and illustrations of high-end books and periodicals, color pictures, various exquisite commercial advertisements, samples, product packaging, trademarks, etc. Coated paper is a flat sheet paper with dimensions of 787mm×1092mm or 880mm×1230mm and a basis weight of 70 to 250g/m2.

PART.02
Characteristics of coated paper
The surface of coated paper is extremely smooth and flat, with high smoothness and good gloss. The coating used has a whiteness of over 90%, and the particles are extremely fine. It has also been super-pressed by a press machine, so the smoothness of coated paper is generally 600 to 1000 s.
At the same time, the coating is evenly distributed on the paper surface, presenting a pleasing white color. The requirements for coated paper are that the coating is thin and uniform, without bubbles, and the amount of adhesive in the coating is appropriate to prevent paper powdering and fraying during printing. Additionally, the absorption of xylene by coated paper should be appropriate, suitable for printing with a mesh count of over 60 lines per centimeter.

PART.03
Main uses of coated paper
Woven-textured coated paper is made by pressing old blankets. Besides having a smooth surface and high whiteness, it also gives the printed graphics and pictures a three-dimensional effect. Therefore, this type of coated paper can be widely used for printing newspapers, advertisements, landscape paintings, exquisite calendars, portrait photography pictures, etc.
Coated paper is one of the main paper types used by printing factories. Coated paper is a common name, and its official name should be printing coating paper. It is widely used in real life.
The beautiful calendars you see, the posters sold in bookstores, the book covers, illustrations, art books, and albums, etc., are almost all made of coated paper. Various exquisite packaging, paper handbags, labels, trademarks, etc. also use coated paper in large quantities.
Common coated paper is divided into various thickness specifications ranging from 105g/m2 to 350g/m2.
In the sale of coated paper, the size of a single sheet of paper is generally divided into two sizes: large format (889mm × 1194mm) and medium format (787mm × 1092mm). The price of coated paper per ton is approximately 7,000 to 7,500 yuan. The price of a 200g/m2 coated paper with a size of 889mm × 1194mm is about 2 yuan.

Classification of the weight of coated paper
1. 105g/m2 and 128g/m2 coated paper: These are the minimum weight of coated paper suitable for four-color printing on both sides. Since the paper is too thin, it will make the printed matter less opaque, easily causing front-back overlap. They are mostly used in magazine pages, inserts, and large-scale low-grade promotional materials.
2. 157g/m2 coated paper: Coated paper is currently the most widely used weight in ordinary single-page printing. Most advertising single pages, folding pages, and many other promotional materials are made of 157g/m2 coated paper. Attention should also be paid in daily interviews and work. This weight of coated paper is mostly used for single-page folding pages, album pages, posters, etc.
3. 200g/m2 and 250g/m2 coated paper: Compared to 157g/m2 coated paper, the cost of coated paper is higher. It is mostly chosen by large companies and customers who pursue quality. It is mostly used for high-quality single pages, posters, album covers, inner pages, cards, packaging boxes, etc.
4. 300g/m2 and 350g/m2 coated paper: Coated paper is less commonly used. Because its quality and range are the same as those of card paper, its application is not very widespread. It is mostly used for album covers, inner pages, cards, business cards, invitations, packaging boxes, handbags, etc.

PART.05
Precautions for Binding Copperplate Paper
Copperplate paper has the characteristics of hard texture, high surface smoothness, and large weight. The books and periodicals made from it are mostly picture albums, and the size is larger, which increases the difficulty and labor intensity of binding processing. Therefore, the processing must be strictly controlled to ensure the product quality of the books and periodicals.
① Any folding machine can be used for folding, but it can only be folded up to three times and must have a cutting edge to remove air. Folding twice or once is the best (with additional stapling), to prevent eight-character wrinkles from appearing inside the book pages. Manual folding is generally two times (with additional stapling) or once. The folding board should not be too sharp and the scraping force should not be too large to avoid scratches.
② When using the sewing line, the needle holes should not be too large (machine sewing) or too deep (hand sewing saw cut), to avoid the book pages from shifting or losing glue after being glued.
③ The viscosity of the adhesive used should not be too high (for binding single pages), to ensure that it is firmly attached and does not peel off the surface coating after being glued.
④ When cutting, the stack of books should not be too thick, as the paper has a high sliding force, and it is easy to shift after being aligned. The angle of the cutting knife α should be the same as that of the coated paper, and generally 23° can be used.
⑤ Copperplate paper has a lot of fillers and is not resistant to folding. Once there are creases or scratches, it is difficult to restore flatness. It is prone to become brittle after being exposed to sunlight, is likely to stick together, mold, and be scrapped due to moisture. Therefore, the temperature and humidity in the factory and warehouse should be appropriately controlled.
