Printed materials are ubiquitous in daily life and professional environments. From brochures and product catalogs to business cards and reports, printing plays an essential role in communication and branding. This article provides a comprehensive overview of fundamental printing knowledge, covering printing methods, equipment classification, paper types, and selection criteria for office and artistic applications.

Printing Methods and Classification

Printing techniques can be broadly categorized by method:

1. Offset Lithography (also known as planographic printing): This technique involves transferring ink from a flat plate to a rubber blanket, then onto the printing surface. It is widely used for high-quality printing on paper and self-adhesive labels.

2. Flexographic Printing: Commonly applied in plastic, metallic foil, and other flexible packaging materials, this method uses relief plates and fast-drying inks.

3. Screen Printing: Often referred to as "universal printing," screen printing allows for printing on diverse substrates-including glass, metal, fabric, and plastic-offering great versatility. However, due to its relatively low efficiency and higher cost per unit, it is less suitable for large-volume production runs.

Classification of Printing Equipment

Printing presses can be classified based on two primary criteria:

1. Paper Size Capacity: Designated by machine size, common classifications include full-size, double-size (2-up), 4-up, 6-up, and 8-up machines, indicating the number of standard-sized sheets they can process.

2. Color Capability: Machines are also categorized by color output, such as single-color, two-color, four-color (CMYK), 4+1 color (CMYK plus one spot color, e.g., gold or silver), and 4+ color configurations.

Nomenclature of Printing Presses

Machine designations often reflect technical specifications. For example, a "4103" press indicates a 4-up format, monochrome (single-color) capability, and version "03," denoting the third iteration or improvement in the model series.
