Paper is a material commonly encountered and utilized in daily life. However, few are aware that it can be engineered for use in manufacturing furniture, architectural structures, and even advanced aerospace components. The integration of high technology into the paper industry has significantly expanded paper's functionality beyond its traditional role in cultural dissemination.

A notable example is the "paper car," recognized as the world's first electric vehicle constructed primarily from paper. This innovative project was proposed by Japanese authorities as a centerpiece for Aichi Prefecture's bid to host the 2005 World Exposition. The vehicle's body is assembled using traditional Japanese handmade "washi" paper, combined with an electric propulsion system. In addition to its aesthetically pleasing design, the car offers impressive performance, achieving a maximum speed of 125 kilometers per hour-features that have attracted considerable interest among automotive enthusiasts. Remarkably, the manufacturer named this prototype the "Firefly."

In recent years, Japan has introduced various functional beauty tissues, including those designed for makeup removal and facial cleansing. These products offer greater convenience compared to conventional liquid removers and effectively remove even waterproof cosmetics. Similar to nail polish remover wipes, compact packs of cosmetic-removing tissues pre-moistened with toner or lotion provide an efficient skincare solution. Simply applying these tissues to the face ensures uniform coverage of skincare agents, making them particularly suitable for travel. Additionally, specialized lip makeup remover tissues help maintain lip hydration after use.

Japan has also developed a range of paper-based furniture, such as tables, chairs, cabinets, and beds. These products match conventional wooden furniture in terms of appearance, color variety, and comfort. Manufactured from reinforced cardboard and coated with ethylene on the surface, paper furniture exhibits sufficient structural rigidity for everyday use. It is not only practical and cost-effective-priced at approximately one-third the cost of standard wooden furniture-but also environmentally sustainable due to its recyclability.

Paper-based architecture has likewise gained practical application. Several years ago, the United States deployed emergency housing units made of paper materials to accommodate transient agricultural workers. Constructed from high-grade corrugated cardboard with a thickness of 127 millimeters, these dwellings incorporate chemical fillers and are reinforced with a composite mesh made of glass fiber and resin. Capable of withstanding up to 60 kilograms per square centimeter of pressure, they are resistant to water, insects, and thermal fluctuations. According to expert assessments, these structures remain durable under outdoor conditions for 15 to 20 years.

In Sweden, a scientist has developed a novel type of corrugated cardboard by incorporating various chemical additives. This advanced material exhibits strength comparable to steel while maintaining the lightweight nature of traditional cardboard. It also demonstrates excellent fire resistance, thermal stability, and water repellency. Recently, a country successfully constructed a paper bridge spanning 15 meters and 3 meters in width using this material, capable of supporting military jeeps weighing over three tons.

Oji Paper Company of Japan has developed a specialty paper known as "Longevity Paper," which remains chemically stable and physically intact for over a thousand years without degradation. Conventional paper containing residual lignin is highly susceptible to deterioration caused by acidic atmospheric gases, and even high-quality paper typically degrades within decades. Oji Paper employs a proprietary chemical treatment to inhibit aging and enhance brightness. When used for academic publications, yearbooks, dictionaries, and archival documents, this paper ensures long-term preservation without yellowing, fading, or loss of integrity.
