Paper weight

The weight of paper is directly related to its thickness. Specifically, paper weight refers to the mass per square meter of the material; thus, the thicker the sheet, the higher its grammage (g/m²). For example, a 90 g/m² paper indicates that one square meter of this paper weighs 90 grams. Papers within this range are commonly used in office printers and photocopiers.

For documents requiring a more substantial feel, papers with a grammage of 90 or 100 g/m² are recommended. As grammage increases beyond 150 g/m², the paper becomes progressively stiffer. A 200 g/m² paper offers a balanced compromise between rigidity and flexibility and is suitable for applications requiring durability without compromising handling. Most inkjet and laser printers can accommodate paper up to 224 g/m² in thickness.

It should be noted that increased paper weight generally reduces flexibility, which may affect feeding performance in printing equipment and, consequently, printing efficiency.

Paper whiteness

Paper whiteness is measured using the CIE Whiteness Index. A higher CIE value indicates greater whiteness, resulting in visually enhanced print quality, improved contrast in color reproduction, and sharper text in monochrome output.

CIE below 159:
Classic white – typically appropriate for internal documents, photocopies, faxes, and drafts.

CIE 159–163:
Medium to high whiteness – provides improved contrast and print clarity, commonly used for general office printing and manual handling.

CIE 164 and above:
Premium white – delivers superior visual quality and is recommended for high-impact materials such as contracts, presentations, high-resolution photographs, and double-sided printing.

Paper weight classification

Paper stiffness increases with grammage, while lower-weight papers are lighter and more flexible. Therefore, the choice of paper weight should align with the intended use of the document.

Low grammage (65–75 g/m²):
Commonly used for letter writing and student assignments. These papers are thin and generally unsuitable for double-sided printing due to potential show-through.

Standard grammage:
80 g/m² is the most widely used standard for printer paper. It is sufficiently opaque for double-sided printing and offers reliable performance across most devices. However, 90 g/m² is considered optimal, providing enhanced durability and a more professional finish.
