The size of A4 paper is defined by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) under ISO 216. It measures 21 * 29.7 cm (210mm × 297mm). Most countries in the world adopt this international standard for paper sizes. This standard was initially incorporated by the German Empire in 1922 as DIN (numbered as DIN476). Although some formats were independently developed by France during the same period as the a5 paper format, they were later forgotten. ISO 216 defines three sets of paper sizes: A, B, and C. The C set of paper sizes is mainly used for envelopes.
The aspect ratio of the paper sizes in Group A is all √2 : 1. Then, the values are rounded to the nearest millimeter. A0 is defined as a sheet of paper with an area of one square meter and an aspect ratio of √2 : 1. The subsequent paper sizes such as A1, A2, A3... are defined by folding the sheet with the smaller number along the longer side and then rounding to the nearest millimeter. The paper sizes in Group B are the geometric averages of the same-numbered and the one-numbered smaller-sized sheets in Group A. The paper sizes in Group C are mainly used for envelopes.
Copies of texts, tables, legends and other materials can all be made. The common sizes of copy paper (in millimeters) are: Type A - A4: 210 * 297, A3: 420 * 297; Type B - B4: 257 * 364, B5: 257 * 182; Type K - 8K: 270 * 390, 16K: 270 * 195, F4: 216 * 279 (also known as American A4); each type has 500 sheets, and every 500 sheets are uniformly referred to as "ream" internationally. There are 70g and 80g for each type, and the general A4 copy paper is white. Of course, there are also colored copy papers.
Ordinary inkjet printing paper is specially designed for general inkjet printing. Therefore, the printing quality is better than that of ordinary copy paper. It is suitable for printing general A3-sized documents and pictures with low requirements. It can be used for electrostatic copying, laser printing, thermal fusion printing, CAD inkjet printing, faxing, etc. It has a wide range of applications and has become the first choice for many inkjet printer users.
Photo printing paper is specifically designed for photo printing. Even if you use photo paper to print documents, it is not impossible, but the cost is too high and the overall appearance is rather awkward. Photo printing paper is much thicker than inkjet printing paper, and its surface has undergone special treatment, which can significantly enhance the expressiveness of colors and prevent ink from seeping through at extremely high printing resolutions, effectively avoiding printing failures caused by paper quality. It can be divided into glossy photo paper, photo paper, smooth paper, and high-resolution paper (thick photo paper) types.
It is a type of printing paper that lies between inkjet printing paper and photo printing paper. The difference between inkjet printing paper with photo quality (A3 size) and ordinary inkjet printing paper is that a layer of porous and ink-absorbent pigment is coated on the surface of the paper (inkjet printing base paper), thus forming a good ink-receiving layer on the surface of the paper. It is not used for printing photos, but is suitable for printing important briefings, speeches, news releases, news letters, color picture products and other materials and documents with pictures and text.
Computer printing paper is very special and is only suitable for dot matrix printers. It is commonly used in telephone exchange business halls, mobile business halls, banks, and large-scale sales industries, etc. Because computer printing paper has layers such as one layer, two layers, three layers, four layers, and five layers, when purchasing, you must clearly know the number of layers you are buying to avoid making a wrong purchase.
Thermal paper is also known as thermal fax paper, thermal recording paper, thermal copy paper. In Taiwan, it is called heat-sensitive duplicate paper. It serves as a communication medium for text and graphics on A4-sized paper in fax machines, that is, it is used as fax paper. In medical and measurement systems, it is used as recording materials, such as electrocardiogram papers, thermal instrument record papers, etc. It is used as printing paper for Internet terminals. In commercial activities, it is used to make trademarks, barcodes (POS), etc. Among them, the usage of thermal paper is the largest.
Apart from the printing paper mentioned above, other types of printing paper are mostly specialized and are rarely used in daily life. Here, we will briefly introduce some other types of printing paper, including self-adhesive paper for electronic engraving machines, electrostatic recording paper (with high surface resistance), electrostatic drawing paper, electrothermal recording paper, high-speed drawing ink, heat-sensitive wax paper (heat-sensitive plate paper), and heat-sensitive recording paper (with high sensitivity and low sensitivity), etc.
